If your child was unsure whether Reggie had made a mistake, please draw a part-whole model and replace the numbers with objects. Use five objects for the first part and two objects for the second part. Encourage your child to move these objects along the straight lines to form the whole. This will show your child that the whole cannot be three. You can then use objects in the same way with the corrected part-whole model.
